A lot of questions come into my office regarding burning. There is NO OPEN BURNING permitted in the Borough of Brookhaven, even if it is controlled as prohibited by Borough Ordinance 680.04, adopted September 9, 1957, and Ordinance 565, passed August 10, 1992, and August 6, 2001.
Examples of open burning include, but are not limited to:
- Bonfires
- Burning of brush
- Leaves
- Trash or rubbish
- Construction debris and materials
Residents MAY USE covered fire pits or chimineas on their property. However, due to the potential hazards to life and property that are always present with fire, there are conditions governing their use within the borough:
- The fire pit must be covered or contained by a full screen to minimize sparks.
- A fire pit or chiminea is not considered contained if flames rise significantly beyond the screen or chimney and create a potentially hazardous condition.
- Branches, sticks, and twigs being burned should not exceed approximately two inches in diameter.
If smoke from a fire becomes a NUISANCE to your neighbors and results in the fire company being called or dispatched for a “Smoke in the Area” or similar complaint, the fire will be extinguished by the responding fire department.
Please install NEW SMOKE DETECTORS if yours are more than five years old or have become discolored. THEY DO SAVE LIVES.
Swimming pool safety rules are still the same as when we were kids:
- Wait 30 minutes after eating before re-entering the pool to swim or play.
- NEVER allow a child to swim alone or unattended.
