Fire Marshal Safety Tips – Fireplaces, Chimneys, and Flues

  • Have your fireplaces, chimneys, and flues inspected and cleaned regularly.
  • Keep a screen in front of the fireplace at all times.
  • Only burn dry seasoned hardwood in your fireplace or wood stove.
  • Artificial logs burn up to three times than natural wood. These logs are made of sawdust, parrafin wax and glue. Make sure your fireplace and wood stove are rated for use with these types of logs. Read and follow all instructions on wrapper and manufacturer’s recommendations for fireplace/stove.

Never throw or spray any flammable liquids into a fireplace. This includes gasoline, lighter fluids, or liquor.

  • Never place wrapping paper or evergreens into your fireplace to burn.
  • Fireplace/wood stove ashes should be placed in a metal container for disposal. Ashes can have live coals up to three days after a fire. Never place ashes on a deck or in garbage.
Call 911 if something doesn’t seem right with your fireplace or wood burning stove.
