Charity Commons Committee

Purpose/Goal:
The Charity Commons Committee was established following the Borough of Brookhaven’s acquisition of the seven-acre former Our Lady of Charity School and Convent. Our mission is to transform this historic site into a thriving, accessible, and sustainable greenway that enhances the environmental, recreational, and social well-being of our residents.

To ensure this space serves our community for generations, our immediate goal is to commission a professional planner to develop a comprehensive usage plan. Funded through dedicated local initiatives, this roadmap will guide our decision-making and project milestones. Our ultimate vision is to create a viable, eco-friendly sanctuary that fosters a deep connection with nature and promotes healthy, active living for all.

Events & Initiatives:
The Charity Commons Committee is committed to a transparent, community-driven redevelopment process. Our current initiatives focus on laying the groundwork for a sustainable and vibrant greenspace.

Current Focus: Fundraising for the Master Plan: Our primary initiative is raising the capital required to hire a professional land-use planner. This expert will ensure the 7-acre site is developed efficiently, safely, and in harmony with the local ecosystem.Grant Research: The committee is actively identifying county, state, and federal “Green Space” grants to supplement borough funding and minimize the tax impact on our residents.
