The Hallie Christine Jackson Butterfly Sanctuary was dedicated on Saturday, August 7, 2023 marking the official opening.

The sanctuary stands as a place of hope. Every flower, every path, every paver, and every delicate wing in the garden is a reminder of the beauty in life and the strength that lies within us all.
History

At the September 2022 Council Meeting, a Resolution was unanimously approved to designate the front area of Durkin Field, adjacent to Coebourn Boulevard, as a wildlife sanctuary and named, The Hallie Christine Jackson Butterfly Sanctuary.
Thanks to Laird Shively for his work and inspiration in seeding this area years before. Without Laird, we would have had to start with bare ground.
This sanctuary was named in honor of Hallie Jackson, who was known to bring people from all walks of life together, despite their differences. Hallie tragically lost her life on October 28, 2019. The tragedy led to the founding of Hope for Hallie, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping teens and adolescents with their mental health, and transforming the conversation surrounding mental health.

This sanctuary has been created and will be maintained by volunteers from the Brookhaven Community and other neighboring communities. Inside the perimeter, you will find many species of butterfly-friendly flowering plants, butterflies, dragonflies, ladybugs, and other treasures of nature.

The sanctuary enhances the butterfly species, and other pollenating species, including endangered Monarch Butterflies that are flourishing within the sanctuary. With two dedicated milkweed beds, Monarchs have a place to lay their eggs, which become caterpillars. The caterpillars are collected and raised in an enclosure that keeps them safe from predators. Upon their emergence from chrysalis, they are then released back into the sanctuary. As of the summer of 2024, volunteers have harvested over 300 caterpillars.

So much to see …

It is also our hope that you will find peace, tranquility, and a general sense of well-being when you visit The Hallie Christine Jackson Butterfly Sanctuary, day or night.
